SAFE ENCOUNTERS TRAINING
Prompted by a desire to keep our son and other's with a disability safe around the community, in 2022 we launched SAFE ENCOUNTERS Training, our not-for-profit advocacy group which provides crisis interaction training to first responders, community partners, and people with disabilities to increase understanding and effective communication during interactions.
It is a simulation-based training designed to enhance understanding and communication strategies during interactions with people in need of assistance.
-
Virtual and in-person training for first responders, community partners, and people with disabilities
-
Simulated scenarios involving individuals with Autism and other disabilities
-
Participants learn to recognize attributes of Autism and adapt their approach to create calm situations using empathy
-
Facilitates Blue Envelope Program
By 2022, 250 first responders in Hamilton County, Ohio, had received this training. In a critical incident in October 2024, the training proved successful when police pursued their son for failing to yield. Due to the training and Ohio Database for Communication Disabilities, officers exercised restraint and provided him with a refresher on driving laws instead of arresting him.
